This is the macOS fix: OmniRoute — a free, open-source AI router that runs on your own PC — with Claude Code wired straight into it, answering from a model that costs nothing. No API key, no credit card, no signup. We start with what OmniRoute actually does, because that's the part nobody explains. It scores every available model live on 12 factors the moment your request lands. It hands your conversation to the next account with a summary when one runs out (Context Relay). And it shrinks your request before it's ever sent — up to 95% fewer tokens, about 89% on average. Then the one honest trade-off, so you know exactly what you're trusting before you rely on this daily. Then we build the whole thing, step by step. The Node.js version check that saves you an error later, npm install -g omniroute, the dashboard on localhost:20128, the default password you have to change, and the No Auth filter — seven providers with no account and no API key. We test a free model with one click and get a real answer in the Playground. Then we create .claude/settings.json in VS Code and point Claude Code at OmniRoute with auto/best-free. The last shot in this video is Claude Code answering, routed locally, on a free model. One door, more than 250 AI providers behind it, about 1.5 billion free tokens pooled across them every month. Every number here came from OmniRoute's own source code and a live install, checked in July 2026 — not copied from anywhere else. The settings.json block is in the pinned comment. Copy it, no typing. #ClaudeCode #OmniRoute #macOS Node.js LTS installer: https://nodejs.org/en/download ──────────────────────────────────────── Dashboard address: localhost:20128 Default dashboard password: CHANGEME, uppercase. Run claude from the folder that CONTAINS .claude, not from inside it. Restart VS Code fully. "claude is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet" / "command not found: claude": separate install, linked above. Then open a new terminal so PATH updates. Error 429, rate limit exceeded: free endpoints are shared and saturate. Test all models, use the green ones. "npm is not recognized" after installing Node.js: open a fresh terminal, then run node --version. Needs 22.22.2+. 403, Invalid API Key format: a provider in the route wants a real key. Disable any provider with a placeholder key. Subscribe if you want dev and AI tools set up properly on macOS. That's what we do here. This tutorial covers: omniroute, omniroute claude code, claude code free, run claude code for free on macOS, omniroute setup macOS, omniroute install, free ai coding assistant, claude code no api key, free llm api, ai router macOS, auto/best-free, opencode free.
